International Mother Language Day 2015

International Mother Language Day (IMLD) is an observance held annually on the 21st of February worldwide to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. It was first announced by UNESCO on the 17th of November 1999. It was also formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages.

The theme for IMLD 2015 is “Inclusion in and through education: Language counts”.

To celebrate the day, CIDLeS was invited by Centro de Bem Estar Social de Minde to give a talk on language diversity and the importance of Minderico for local identity. The involvement of the older generation in the discussion is one of the main goals of this talk, which will be held at the retirement home in Minde by Rita Pedro on February 20th.

On February 23rd, Vera Ferreira gave a course on Minderico at the kindergarten in Minde – the first experience with Minderico for several 4-year-old kids.
